Chicago Blackhawks 2015 Draft Recap
Chicago Blackhawks - 2nd Round (54th Overall): LW Graham Knott (Niagara, OHL)
Name: Graham Knott
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’3, 190 lbs
Born: January 13, 1997, Etobicoke, ON
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”B“/ 54th NA/ 57th NA
Summary: Slick power winger with nifty moves and ability to play a physical game at a fast pace. Knott was one of the better two-way players available but he has put up points in an offensive role. While he can come across as a likely depth forward, he has always performed when given either an extended role or when teamed with playmaking linemates. His work ethic and compete level made him an ideal fit for several Team Canada rosters on the international circuit. Knott is also dangerous on the power play as he can not only shoot the puck and control it in tight spaces, but make smart, accurate passes as well.
Chicago Blackhawks - 3rd Round (91st Overall): LHD Dennis Gilbert (Chicago, USHL)
Name: Dennis Gilbert
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’2, 201 lbs
Born: October 30, 1996, Buffalo, NY
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”C“/ 72nd NA/ 58th NA
Summary: Notre Dame-bound Western New Yorker who plays a sound two-way game. Gilbert probably won’t develop into an offensive threat but he can be counted on to make proper decisions in his own end. He was occasionally given free reign with the puck while playing for former Buffalo Sabre Mike Peca while with the Junior Sabres, which boosted his confidence with the puck, especially on the attack through the neutral zone. What he does with he puck once he gets past people is an area he needs to work on, as he too often relies on the safe play when certain situations call for more creativity.
Chicago Blackhawks - 4th Round (121st Overall): LHD Ryan Shea (BC High, MA-HS)
Name: Ryan Shea
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’0, 175 lbs
Born: February 11, 1997, Milton, MA
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”C“/ 172nd NA/ 155th NA
Summary: It’s never an easy transition to go from forward to defense, but Shea seemed to take it in stride. Having a forward’s mentality made him a lethal option on the back end while at Boston College High School, but you could see he was having issues dealing with the physical nature of the position, while the positioning portion is still a work a progress. Having offensive instincts and accurate passing ability will serve him well when he makes his debut for Youngstown in 2015-16, and his subsequent NCAA career at Northeastern should fine tune his skills in his own end.
Chicago Blackhawks - 5th Round (151st Overall): RW Radovan Bondra (Kosice, Slovakia))
Name: Radovan Bondra
Position: Right Wing
Height/Weight: 6’5, 220 lbs
Shoots: Left
Born: January 27, 1997, Trebisov, Slovakia
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): “C”/ 52nd Eur/ 34th Eur
Summary: Big-bodied defensive stalwart who was a top scorer in the Slovak junior circuit before reinventing himself into a shutdown checker. Bondra has difficulty burying his chances but he’s got enough size and strength to wear you down in close quarters. While the size and strength combination is certainly tantalizing, he’s going to have to find his offensive game in terms of awareness while producing an acceptable aggregate.
Chicago Blackhawks - 6th Round (164th Overall): RW Roy Radke (Barrie, OHL)
Name: Roy Radke
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’2, 203 lbs
Born: December 10, 1996, Chicago, IL
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”C“/ 11th NA/ 104th NA
Summary: Chicago-area power forward who chose Barrie over the NCAA but was a victim of Colts’ coach Dale Hawerchuk’s overuse of his top two lines. Radke is difficult to contain when he’s attacking with speed but his lack of finishing is what contributed to his depth role. A project to begin with, Radke’s 2015-16 season may very well be a make or break year as he will be 19 years old and on a top-heavy team.
Chicago Blackhawks - 6th Round (181st Overall): LHD Joni Tuulola (HPK, Finland)
Name: Joni Tuulola
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’2, 180 lbs
Born: January 1, 1996, Hameenlinna, Finland
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”B“/ 35th Eur/ 32nd Eur
Summary: Passed over in the 2014 Entry Draft, Tuulola made his full-season debut in Liiga play as a bottom-pairing defenseman with some power play time. Tuulola can move well and handle the puck, and although he certainly tries to be physical, he has trouble containing his men in and around the net, especially when dealing with forwards with above-average size. He at times makes up for this by being positionally sound and using his long reach, but you have you wonder why he didn’t add on some muscle a full year after getting passed in 2014. Still, he’s an excellent puck mover and distributor, and the one-on-one issues will likely be worked out as he gets stronger.
Chicago Blackhawks - 7th Round (211th Overall): RW John Dahlstrom (Frolunda, SHL)
Name: John Dahlstrom
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’0, 189 lbs
Born: January 22, 1997, Kungsbacka, Sweden
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): NR/ NR / NR
Summary: Dahlstrom is a one-dimensional scoring forward who led Frolunda’s SuperElit team with 20 goals in 28 games to earn a two-game stint with the senior club. He’s not physical and he doesn’t compete enough to be considered a “tough out”, but he has a knack for scoring goals both off the rush and off the pass. He is not an obscure prospect, nor should he be considered a hidden gem, as he has played for Team Sweden at several high-profile international tournaments and in each one was practically invisible. If he played a traditional two-game like most Swedish draft eligibles, he could have gone much higher. But the truth is he just likes to score, which may or may not make him a worthy gamble.
