Calgary Flames 2015 Draft Recap
Calgary Flames - 2nd Round (53rd Overall): RHD Rasmus Andersson (Barrie, OHL)
Name: Rasmus Andersson
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’0, 212 lbs
Born: October 27, 1996, Malmo, Sweden
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”B“/ 84th NA/ 93rd NA
Summary: Andersson is a risk-taking puck mover who’s a very good power play option because of his shooting/passing combination. The son of former New York Rangers blueliner Peter Andersson, Rasmus is at his best when he’s paired with a reliable partner to limit adventures and who allows him to roam and be creative with the puck.
Calgary Flames - 2nd Round (60th Overall): LHD Oliver Kylington (Färjestad BK, SHL)
Name: Oliver Kylington
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’0, 185 lbs
Born: May 19, 1997, Sundbyberg, Sweden
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”A“/ 1st Eur/ 6th Eur
Summary: Kylington is an outstanding passer and playmaker who makes hard, accurate passes both on his forehand and backhand. He has a good slap shot with a pretty big wind up, but he has the ability to wire a low, hard wrist shot with accuracy from great distances. While not classified as a physical defender, he is a well-conditioned specimen who has the stamina to play extended shifts. Kylington does not have the physical attributes nor the leadership abilities to become a franchise-type defender. Many compare his offensive skills to Erik Karlsson or even Scott Niedermayer — both of whom were similarly raw and devoid of defensive reliability when drafted. But his flash does not mean he thinks the game in the same manner as the aforementioned. He will likely be a very good player on a tandem pairing rather than a singular weapon who can carry a duo or power play by himself.
Calgary Flames - 5th Round (136th Overall): LW Pavel Karnaukhov (Calgary, WHL)
Name: Pavel Karnaukhov
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’2, 194 lbs
Born: March 15, 1997, Minsk, Belarus
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”C“/ 140th NA/ 118th NA
Summary: Up-and-down season for the KHL’s eighth overall pick in their 2014 draft but still a highly-skilled sniper. Picked up the slack in the postseason when Calgary was hurt by injuries. Karnaukhov is not a swift-skating winger, but he is strong on his skates and very good at protecting the puck and winning board battles. Has a knack of fighting through checks to get to the net.
Calgary Flames - 6th Round (166th Overall): LW Andrew Mangiapane (Barrie Colts)
Name: Andrew Mangiapane
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 5’10, 175 lbs
Born: April 4, 1996, Bolton, ON
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): NR/ 147th NA/ 85th NA
Summary: Slick uberscorer who shredded the OHL alongside Rasmus Andersson and Joe Blandisi. Mangiapane, who was passed over in the 2014 draft, may be undersized, but he’s a tenacious two-way forward who can kill penalties and fill in at the pivot when asked. Rose 62 spots from midterm to final thanks to a 43-goal, 104-point season.
Calgary Flames - 7th Round (196th Overall): RHD Riley Bruce (North Bay, OHL)
Name: Riley Bruce
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’6, 205 lbs
Born: July 16, 1997, Carp, ON
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): NR/ NR/ 210th NA
Summary: A key component to North Bay’s vaunted defense, Bruce bounced between the second and third pairings for most of his sophomore OHL season but didn’t provide enough offense to warrant power play time or offensive opportunities. A classic defensive defenseman, Bruce uses his long reach and solid positioning to deny zone entries and interdict both passes and shots while on the penalty kill.
