Dallas Stars 2015 Draft Recap
Dallas Stars - 1st Round (12th Overall): RW Denis Guryanov (Lada Togliatti, KHL)
Name: Denis Guryanov
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’3, 183 lbs
Born: June 7, 1997, Togliatti, Russia
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): NR/ 7th Eur/ 7th Eur
Summary: Usually the most skilled player on the ice at any given time, Guryanov has an excellent shot and release — he’s most certainly a natural goal scorer who is very clever around the net. His release is lightning quick and can also fire off a pretty wicked backhander off the rush. Guryanov is also super competitive and plays with a strong desire to win and be the best. He uses his powerful leg drive and upper body strength to deliver solid body checks, but he can also dominate a cycle by protecting the puck with a long reach and sound positioning. He’s shown flashes of being a playmaker, but he can also over-handle the puck and make questionable decisions. Like most offensive forwards, his commitment to the defensive zone is a work in progress, but he’s always involved in the play and does not shy away from the dirty areas in either zone. Projects to be a top-six scoring forward who can be used in either special teams situations.
Dallas Stars - 2nd Round (49th Overall): LW Roope Hintz (Ilves Tampere, Finland)
Name: Roope Hintz
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’3, 185
Born: November 17, 1996, Tampere, Finland
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): “C”/ 11th Eur/ 14th Eur
Summary: The desire, NHL build and noggin should all translate into success at higher levels, and he may be closer than most may think. So why didn’t he go higher? He doesn’t offer much in the creativity and finishing department, but he can handle a pass on the fly and help drive extended the in the offensive zone.
Dallas Stars - 4th Round (103rd Overall): LHD Chris Martenet (London, OHL)
Name: Chris Martenet
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’2, 184
Born: July 29, 1997, Edmonton, AB
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): “C”/ 76th NA/ 56th NA
Summary: A 6’7 project who actually plays a smooth, heads-up game. Martenet was a reliable defender for London, which didn’t heap a ton of pressure on him in the beginning but later changed its tune. The Stars’ prospect pool could use a steady blueliner who doesn’t panic and actually knows when to leave his position and when not to.
Dallas Stars - 5th Round (133rd Overall): RHD Joseph Cecconi (Muskegon, USHL)
Name: Joe Cecconi
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’2, 209
Born: May 23, 1997, Youngstown, NY
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): “B”/ 70th NA/ 88th NA
Summary: Led Muskegon’s surprising march deep through the USHL playoffs thanks to a physical style and very strong positional game. He’s not going to amaze you with his puck skills, but the Michigan-bound rearguard is a solid static and transitional defender whose active stick and long reach makes him tough to beat during zone entries.
Dallas Stars - 6th Round (163rd Overall): G Markus Ruusu (JYP, Finland)
Name: Markus Ruusu
Position: Goaltender
Catches: Left
Height/Weight: 6’2, 174 lbs
Born: August 23, 1997, Jyväskylä, Finland
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): NR/ NR/ NR
Summary: It’s understandable that Dallas opted for a Finnish goalie this late. What’s puzzling is that they picked this Finnish goalie. Ruusu put up decent numbers in Finland’s junior circuit, but he was outperformed by and played second fiddle to undrafted National Team star Veini Vehvilainen. Ruusu is a conservative type who plays deep in the nets but a quick glove hand. Ruusu’s slight height advantage over Vehvilainen is not enough (in our opinion) to overcome the significant technical superiority the latter possesses.
