How it works

CalderWatch is a points system designed to reward rookies who make the most out of their usage on an individual basis. While shot generation and shot suppression relative to teammates is a useful tool to help measure a player’s contributions beyond traditional stats, I believe raw production, specifically at even strength and what the scoreboard looks like when points are being produced, is a better way sort out the Calder Trophy contenders from the pretenders.

With CalderWatch, rookies are rewarded for individual achievement in categories like primary point production, scoring chances, clutch play and usage. The purpose is to try and identify the rookies whose points and shot attempts have a greater impact on the outcome of a game. For example, a goal scored or set up by a rookie that makes the score 1-0 is far more valuable than a goal scored at 4-1; or a scoring chance from the low slot has a greater chance of going in than a wrist shot flung from 80 feet away. Conversely, a secondary assist on a power-play goal recorded by a defenseman who started 80% of his shifts in the offensive zone is not as impressive as a primary assist at even strength by a forward whose majority of shifts began on his side of center ice.

So you ask, why are several players with more goals and assists ranked lower than players with less? To answer this question, one must consider several factors, such as the timelines of their points, where are their shots being taken from, and are there rookies earning their points against tilted ice. Chances are, you will find answers to all these questions by looking at the nightly CalderWatch point totals. The higher the CalderWatch points, the more involved that player was in his team’s quality point and quality shot production.
