2020 NHL Draft

Midseason Top-300 Draft Rankings

Winger-heavy cluster should dominate the first round

NASHVILLE (The Draft Analyst) — As we cross the midway point of the 2019-20 season into the critical months that lead up to the NHL draft in Montreal, a revision to my preseason rankings and watch list from August is in order. For the last six months, hundreds of draft-eligible players from over a dozen leagues have been profiled and evaluated in an attempt to gain a general idea of the quality and depth of this year’s class of prospects. As stated in previous editions, the purpose of this list is to provide the most casual of hockey fans with a general understanding on who the top draft prospects are and which positions and teams they play for. It also tries to shed light on lesser-known players who have been impressive for their respective teams but may still be several years away from challenging for an NHL job. What this is not, however, is a mid-season prediction on how the draft unfolds. Rather, it’s an attempt to rank players on NHL potential and take a stab at how their careers will unfold (if they are lucky enough to have one). This has been the guiding principle behind all the rankings I have done since 2016.

Although an insignificant minority continue to scoff at the idea of ranking so many teenage players and view this list as some kind of finite determination, the truth is that the demand for such a product has never been higher and it helps promote a niche like draft prospect coverage into the mainstream. Whether it be a single shift or a lengthy winning streak,  I find great joy in shedding even the dimmest of light on a specific program or prospect who does something noteworthy. Again, it’s about promoting the sport rather than spiking the football for ranking a few kids who turned out to be stars. Some might see a specific ranking of a player as inaccurate or unfair, but the response to that is quite simple — my lists are always subject to change. Unfortunately, I can’t rank 300 kids as first-round picks, and I’d like to think that adequately covering multiple leagues across two continents rather than become an expert on only two or three local circuits is what adds meat to public lists that aren’t behind a paywall.

Nonetheless, I do feel we’re deep enough into the season to answer the following questions.

1) Does this draft have a consensus top pick, and if so, are there challengers with a legitimate chance to overtake him?

Yes, there is a consensus top pick, and his name is Alexis Lafreniere, a powerful left wing with exceptional puck skills, a high compete level, and a sharp hockey mind who plays for the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic. As far as challengers go, the only player at this point who has come close to measuring up to Lafreniere’s commanding on-ice presence is center Quinton Byfield, a towering center with excellent balance, elite playmaking skills, and the ability to take over a game at both ends of the ice. The winger vs. center debate is legitimate, but Lafreniere’s season in the QMJHL has been near-historic for present-day standards. Dominating the world junior hockey championship as a draft-year prospect is just one of several accomplishment’s on Lafreniere’s resume that make him the clear-cut favorite over Byfield, but don’t sleep on the latter. He too has franchise-carrying potential.

2) On a scale of 1 to 10, (with 10 being near-historic such as 1979, 2003, or 2015) how deep is the 2020 draft class?

I’d give it a solid 8 out of 10. Lafreniere in my view the best draft prospect since Auston Matthews in 2016 and has similar point-producing potential. One aspect of this draft that I like is that all the top players, to include defenseman Jamie Drysdale, are outstanding playmakers with creativity and skating speed that is between above average to downright explosive. There are no “gritty” two-way types that coaches always seem to rave about — the upper tier of the 2020 class is loaded with pure skill.

The rest of the first round has an abundance of forwards who are either the top scorers on their teams or have been top players for their respective nations at international tournaments. Shawinigan Cataractes forwards Mavrik Bourque and Vasily Ponomaryov have essentially carried their team as 17-year-olds, and Ponomaryov was excellent for Russia winning gold at the under-18 Ivan Hlinka tournament and under-20 World Junior “A” Challenge. Center Connor Zary (Kamloops) and wingers Seth Jarvis (Portland) and Connor McClellon (Winnipeg) are three of the WHL’s top scorers. OHL’ers Jean-Luc Foudy and Jacob Perrault, Russian Marat Khusnutdinov, along with Chicago Steel trio Sean Farrell, Sam Colangelo, and Brendan Brisson are just several of highly-skilled offensive weapons who can pick apart defenses with relative ease.

There will be first-round quality well into the second round. There is, however, a significant drop-off thereafter in terms of point-producing forwards and defensemen with top-pairing upside. When it comes to the draft, it’s usually a good year to be a bad NHL team picking in the top half of the first round. With this year’s group, the same can be said for the contending teams drafting later on.

3) In terms of depth, are there positions of strength? Weakness?

The 2020 draft is all about offensive-minded wingers like Lafreniere, Sweden’s Alexander Holtz and Lucas Raymond, and Germany’s Tim Stutzle, who is a center but has played wing all season. There also is a sprinkling of two-way and puck-rushing defenseman. It is not a strong group for natural centers and goalies, which wasn’t the case last year. There’s a good chance Russia’s Yaroslav Askarov is the highest-drafted netminder since Carey Price in 2005, and most of the more polished backstops for this year will come out of Europe, which usually has a thin pool to choose from.

4) Last year saw record picks from the U.S. National Team Development Program and the USHL while Canadian major junior suffered. Will that trend continue or is this a rebound year for Canada?

This definitely is a bounce-back year for Canadian major junior. Lafreniere and Byfield are expected to become the first Canadian-born duo to go 1-2 in the draft since 2014, and there also is a solid chance four of the first five picks, and close to 20 of the first rounders, will be from the CHL. As for the NTDP, the 2019-20 edition had a tough job following up a program which last year produced eight first-round picks, but they’ve certainly held their own and could deliver as many as four pickls in the top-31. Forwards Thomas Bordeleau and Ty Smilanic, along with defenders Brock Faber and Tyler Kleven, are all late first-round quality and would be ranked higher if not for the ridiculous talent pouring out of Canada. The USHL contingent as whole appears to be top heavy but should be well represented nonetheless.

5) Which other traditional hockey nations are expected to be well represented at the draft itself?

It’s somewhat of a down year for Finnish defenseman and Swedish forwards not named Holtz or Raymond, so those spots on draft boards are likely to be backfilled from Russia regardless of whether teams believe in the “Russia Factor”. The proof is in the pudding — this year’s group of draft-eligible Russians won silver at the 2019 under-18 world championship, gold at the Ivan Hlinka and WJAC, and another silver at the under-20 world juniors. Askarov was a big part of that success, but there have multiple dynamic forwards like Daniil Guschin and Alexander Pashin, a rock-solid defender with top-pairing potential in Shakir Mukhamadullin, and their best overall forward in Rodion Amirov, who could be a top-five pick. Russia also has a couple of sleepers in forwards Daniil Aimurzin, Pavel Tyutnev,  Ivan Zinchenko and Kirill Kondyrev.

Below is an updated list of notable first-year eligible draft prospects for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. This ranking is a follow-up to my preseason draft rankings and watch list that was released in August. Players born between September 16, 2001 and September 15, 2002 are in the zone for consideration. The rankings for draft “overagers” will be published later this month.
