NASHVILLE (The Draft Analyst) — The dust has settled following yet another exciting and entertaining under-20 world junior hockey championship, where nearly a dozen of the top prospects for the 2018 NHL draft showcased their skills (and in some cases, shortcomings) in front of not-so-packed arenas in Buffalo and most importantly, the NHL’s scouting community. Russian winger Andrei Svechnikov (Ranked No. 1) and Swedish defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (Ranked No. 2) entered the competition as the consensus top two prospects for this year’s draft, and neither prospect did anything to hurt their respective stock. Of course, neither player was perfect and had to fight through adversity in different forms — Dahlin was physically targeted by opposing forecheckers as the tournament wore on, whereas Svechnikov just couldn’t convince his coach to play him frequently (more on that later).

As fun as it is to single out two players and make a game out of who goes first overall, the truth is that this draft remains deep and full of franchise-altering potential beyond Mssrs. Svechnikov and Dahlin. As expected, Filip Zadina (Ranked No. 3) of the Czech Republic put on a tremendous display of skill, smarts, clutch play and defenzive-zone responsibility. He was one of the tournament’s top goal scorers and was a key cog in the Czechs’ winning four of the first five games. American power forward Brady Tkachuk (Ranked No. 8) fought and mashed his way up Team USA’s depth chart to earn top-line minutes, plus was responsible for both creating and finishing plays with a high degree of difficulty. Both he and Zadina are complete players who are easily identifiable as the forwards who not only drive possession for the lines, but also require opponents to single them out as their line’s center of gravity.

Doing what these players did in front of who was watching them all but assures that all four will be picked in the top ten, if not within the draft’s first five selections. This is not recency bias, as the aforementioned players throughout each of the last two seasons proved time and again they are special talents who can tailor their games in order to produce what is expected of them. For example, Svechnikov clearly was Russia’s 11th or 12th forward, playing anywhere from nine to 12 minutes a game. Within those contraints, however, the young star was able to register five assists at even strength — four of the primary variety — which by tournament’s end gave him a whopping points-per-60 minutes percentage of 5.40!

Scouts generally understand the WJC is just a blip in an otherwise lengthy one to two-year pre-draft process that includes at least a dozen tournaments, plus league seasons and playoffs. It’s easy to point to recency bias as a critical factor in where players rank on team-internal draft boards, and I’m sure there are several examples of a player’s January WJC performance being enough to convince a GM and a scouting director on which player they were drafting six months later. For once, however, the best prospects were the best players, and even nitpicking of the highest order should not significantly alter pre-WJC rankings like it did in previous years.

Bluechip Blueliners

The NHL’s trade deadline is less than two months away, and bet the farm that at least one GM will unload assets from this year’s draft in order to “have the best chance to win the  blah blah blah blah.”

If there was ever a draft where NHL scouts should be allowed to smack their general manager’s hand with a ruler in order to remind them of the importance of preserving precious 2018 draft picks, it’s this one. The Class of 2018 is loaded with the purest of puck movers — both big and small — and at least half of the top-tier prospects have legitimate star potential. Rasmus Dahlin is the obvious cream of the crop, but there is a growing list of alternative choices who could go on to have just as good an NHL career, if not better. Defenseman Ty Smith (Ranked No. 5) of the Western Hockey League’s Spokane Chiefs is a brilliant two-way defenseman who has “Foundation Piece” written all over him. He’s an on-ice general with a booming shot, and in the off chance a mistake is made, he’s fast enough to recover from it. Swedish puck rusher Adam Boqvist (Ranked No. 6) is a fantastic skater who like Smith can wire the puck — and wire it he does. Although he’s proven to be too good for the Superelit junior league, Boqvist still is a bit raw for the Swedish Hockey League. His path to the NHL might be more indirect than that of Dahlin’s or Smith’s, but his elite puck skills and speed should keep his pre-NHL development time to a minimum. The United States under-18 program — always a hotbed of superior talent — is responsible for the recent development of two premier offensive defensemen eligible for the 2018 draft — Michigan Wolverine Quinn Hughes (Rankled No. 10) and current National Team Development Program backliner Bode Wilde (Ranked No. 14). Both are uber-gamblers with the puck, but their skating is fast, fluid and almost impossible to defend against.

While some view the current crop of draft-eligible Canadian Hockey League forwards as a notch lower than previous groups, there are several CHL-trained defensemen whose size and maturity give them the potential to make both a significant and immediate impact at the highest of levels. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has a pair of rearguards in Noah Dobson (Ranked No, 16) and Jared McIsaac (Ranked No. 18) that would be getting way more attention had this been any other draft year. Both are excellent three-zone defenders with mobility, but their hard shots and tape-to-tape passing acumen allows them to be used in any situation. Speaking of specialties, is there a better power play quarterback — Dahlin included — than Evan Bouchard (Ranked No. 20) of the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights? A big body with long, smooth stride and cannon of a shot, Bouchard leads all OHL defensemen in scoring and carried the Knights when most of their key players were at the WJC.

Personal Favorites

Some parents will tell you that there’s always one of their kids who tug at their heart a little more than any of the rest of their children. It’s not playing favorites. It’s just the way it is.

Here are some of the players who from a draft prospect standpoint have tugged at my heart:

Ty Smith (Spokane, WHL) — I know, I already mentioned him, and in glowing detail. But watching this kid control the flow of the game with changing speeds while distributing the puck with so much fury reminds me of a cross between Drew Doughty and Ray Bourque. I have a thing for hard shooters and hard tape-to-tape passers and Smith is one of the best at both of them.

LW Joel Farabee (U.S. U18, NTDP) — Forget about the fact that he’s a Syracuse kid and the region has produced some quality NHL’ers. I love that Farabee is such an assassin and will fight tooth and nail to get the puck on his stick. He is going to be a nightmare to play against because he can do so many things while moving at top speed.

C Milos Roman (Vancouver, WHL) — I’m not saying that Roman will be a star, but with his puck skills, effort and approach to every shift, I wouldn’t be the least bit surpised if he did. Roman is the top rookie forward in the WHL and played such an invaluable role for Slovakia at the recent WJC. He plays hard in all three zones and can carve you up in open ice.

LHD Rasmus Sandin (Sault Ste Marie, OHL) — In terms of puck poise, Sandin’s one of the calmest teenage defensemen you’ll see get drafted this year. He played alongside Adam Boqvist at the Hlinka and I thought he was just as good. He’s a very good skater but his puck distributing and one-on-one play is what should make him an NHL mainstay for at least a decade.

LW Jan Jenik (Liberec, Extraliga) — A two-way winger with size, soft hands and a high compete level? Where do I sign? Jenik was outstanding at the ivan Hlinka and then carried his strong play well into the first half of the season. Temmate Jakub Lauko may the the fancy, explosive one, but Jenik is the type of kid you want and need on that wall.

LW Niklas Nordgren (HIFK, SM-Liiga) — Short, stocky and an absolute bull in a china shop when he’s on the puck. His skating and footwork are excellent, and he can pivot away from danger, only to go right back at attacking it. Nordgren has sick hands and makes a living around the net.

C Curtis Douglass (Windsor, OHL) — I’d like to think I’ve followed the game of hockey for a long time. But I can’t recall ever seeing a 6’8 two-way center with the kind of tight-quarter mobility and hockey sense Douglas has. This manchild was built for trench warfare and I can only pray that I won’t have to root against him when he makes it to the NHL.

C Tyler Madden (Tri-City, USHL) — The son of three-time Stanley Cup winner John “Mad Dog” Madden is a phenomenal skater in every sense of the term — straight-line speed, first-step explosiveness, edges, pivots, lateral, backwards. He plays an incredibly smart two-way game and is a commanding presence when he’s on the ice.

C Ivan Morozov (Mamonty Yugry, MHL) — A dual-threat, two-way center who is as good a playmaker as he is a finisher. Morozov is a lot like Flyers’ prospect German Rubtsov in that he’s skilled enough to make quality plays after using his strength to win puck battles.

Below is the January list of notable first-year eligible draft prospects for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. These rankings took into consideration a player’s regular-season performance, plus any additional prospect events or international tournaments he may have participated in. While statistical production — both advanced and traditional — hold a significant amount of weight in where players were ranked, I also considered the impact of in-game roles, place on depth chart, ice time and quality of competition. Players born between September 16, 1999 and September 15, 2000 are in the zone for consideration.
