Boston Bruins 2015 Draft Recap

Name: Jakub Zboril
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’0 183 lbs
Born: February 21, 1997, Brno, CZE
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”A“/ 11th NA / 12th NA
Summary:  Zboril is still a mobile skater in that he can find holes and attack them if passing lanes are clogged. He’s very strong on his feet and has very good balance, and he uses his size, reach and an active stick to fix opponents into low-scoring opportunities. All signs point towards Zboril possessing an NHL-caliber noggin, and while his projection is that of a dependable defenseman rather than an explosive points producer, the right system and enablers would likely result in gaudier numbers.

Name: Jake DeBrusk
Position: Left Wing
Shoots
Left
Height/Weight:
6’0 174 lbs
Born:
October 17, 1996, Edmonton, AB
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final):
”B“/ 24th NA / 19th NA
Summary:  DeBrusk has the makings of a top-6 NHL’er because of his scoring prowess, but he’s also a leader who has proven he can carry a team when they needed him most. He makes smart plays in all three zones and is a very good skater who reads plays well enough to avoid costly mistakes. DeBrusk is a lot like Corey Perry from a goal-scoring standpoint, in that he does not possess a specific mind-blowing skill, yet continuously beats every tactic thrown against him for a handful (or more) of scoring chances every game.

Name: Zach Senyshyn
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’1 192 lbs
Born: March 30, 1997, Ottawa, ON
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): NR/ 56th NA / 38th NA
Summary:  Senyshyn, who wasn’t even given a letter rating by Central Scouting in their preliminary list, has a very good shot and can score in a number of ways. He’s at his best, however, when he’s in full flight, beating defensemen to the outside or inside and taking the disc right towards the blue paint. If there was an area or two where he could certainly work on, it would be his playmaking ability, and decision making when bulldozing through a Gustav Line of defenders is not an option. Those things can be improved on with experience. For now, he’s an outstanding option for the wing and is certainly going to make his coach at the next level very happy.

Name: Brandon Carlo
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’5 199 lbs
Born: November 26, 1996, Colorado Springs, CO
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”A“/ 16th NA / 25th NA
Summary:  Carlo has excellent lateral movement and can really close in on an opponent, and his active stick and the aforementioned reach makes it extremely difficult to execute scoring plays and quality shots. His best attribute his denying entry into the zone. Forget about his size and the fear of getting pummeled; he provides literally no space to maneuver. Time and time again you saw onrushing forwards taking sharp 90-degree before the blue lone in order to avoid him. Naturally, he’s no picnic in the slot and in board battles. Carlo has an unique combination of defensive smarts and physical attributes. He may not put up points, but he’ll solve problems in other areas. He’s a dedicated worker and solid teammate who has the respect of those playing with him and against him.

Name: Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson
Position: Center
Shoots: Right
Height/Weight: 6’1 190 lbs
Born: October 31, 1996, Stockholm, Sweden
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”B“/ 39th NA / 31st NA
Summary:  Excellent season for Omaha (USHL) with a team-best 38 assists and 53 points. He’s a skilled two-way center with size who’s headed to Boston University in the fall. He’s a very good playmaker and can stickhandle through traffic, but his best attribute is his ability to play a sound, responsible game in all three zones.

Name: Jeremy Lauzon
Position: Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height/Weight: 6’2 193 lbs
Born: April 28, 1997, Val d’Or, QC
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”B“/ 65th NA / 42nd NA
Summary:  Had the resume to be a top-50 pick because of his gifted play with the puck, but the defense is a massive work in progress. At this point he’s a talented offensive defenseman who likely needs a few years in the minors to improve in his own end.

Name: Daniel Vladnar
Position: Goaltender
Catches: Left
Height/Weight: 6’5 185 lbs
Born: August 20, 1997, Prague, Czech Republic
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”A“/ 2nd Eur / 2nd Eur
Summary:  Towering netminder is a bit of a gamble since he’s got some technical issues to work out. Vladnar battled with inconsistency this season, but his NHL build and high upside makes him a viable long-term project.

Name: LW Jesse Gabrielle
Position: Left Wing
Catches: Left
Height/Weight: 5’11 205 lbs
Born: June 17, 1997, Edmonton, AB
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”B“/ 61st NA / 73rd NA
Summary:  Was putting up points until an early-season trade from Brandon to Regina. Physical, high-energy type forward who probably would have gone higher had he stayed with the Wheaties and posted better numbers.

Name: Cameron Hughes
Position: Center
Catches: Left
Height/Weight: 6’0 165 lbs
Born: October 9, 1996, Edmonton, AB
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”C“/ 183rd NA / 196th NA
Summary:  Edmontonian who was one of the NCAA’s top recruits but saw his stock drop after he went rather unoticed during Wisconsin’s nightmarish season. An exceptional playmaker with top-end speed, you have to expect the rebuilding Badgers to continue feeding him with big minutes. You have to think the Bruins wanted to avoid the expected bidding war if Hughes went undrafted after what should be a stellar collegiate career.

Name: Jack Becker
Position: Center/Right Wing
Catches: Right
Height/Weight: 6’3 190 lbs
Born: June 24, 1997, Duluth, MN
Central Scouting Rankings (Prelim/Mid/Final): ”C“/ 166th NA / 164th NA
Summary:  A big-bodied power forward who can also play center, Becker committed to Wisconsin over Minnesota a week before the draft. The Badgers are returning a lot of underclassmen, so if Becker gets top-six minutes, he’ll most definitely have earned them. Becker has soft hands and very good hockey sense for playing a power game. His patience with the puck, and ability to cause havoc and clean up around the net makes him a great option for the power play. Becker also kills penalties as a center, but he will likely play the wing at Wisconsin.
