Scouting Report

A hard-working playmaker with quickness who contributes in all three zones, Farrell is a former NTDP’er who this season carved out a nice reputation as a legitimate scoring threat. He finished as the USHL’s co-leader with 41 assists and placed seventh in scoring with 56 points to earn All-Star honors. At the 2019 under-20 World Junior “A” Challenge, Farrell proved his impressive point totals for Chicago in the USHL were no aberration as he finished the tournament with five goals and three assists in six games. Of course, Farrell is no stranger to international competition thanks to his two full seasons with the NTDP.

Farrell is a smaller player who competes hard and is buzzing all over the ice. He has incredibly soft hands and excellent vision and playmaking skills, but his lack of size does not prevent him from battling hard along the walls or fighting for low- slot positioning. He may have a history of playing with elite linemates, but credit is due for Farrell proving himself capable of dictating tempo against the best teenagers both the USHL and the international pool have to offer.

Although he was more of a support player on a stacked NTDP a season ago, Farrell’s abilities, namely his speed and creativity, were quite distinguishable during limited ice time. This season, Farrell proved himself as one of the USHL’s most prolific scorers on a Chicago roster loaded with talent, and his energy and high compete level set the right example for his teammates to follow. He helped run the power play and also killed penalties; the latter being an situation where he was a constant shorthanded threat.

Farrell can play center or wing but seems comfortable being a playmaker and cycle facilitator on the flank. He may not look like he has ice water running through his veins, but Farrell is tough competitor who doesn’t buckle under pressure from bigger defenders and can make highlight-reel plays off of a seemingly harmless half-wall possession. He’s committed to Harvard University.
